Neuroscience is a remarkably well-organized and well-written text. It is highly accessible and easy to follow, which is impressive given the amount of detail and depth it provides. The book does an excellent job of bridging between molecular and molar levels of analysis, between basic and clinical science, and between the big picture and discrete detail. Get the 4th edition

The 5th Edition has updated artwork that contains numerous, critical errors. Two examples:
In the chapter on synaptic plasticity, there is a figure on the property of associativity with a text box that says synapse not strengthened, when it should say strengthened. The 4th edition does not have this error.
In the chapter on upper motor neuron control, the first figure shows that the upper motor neurons from the cortex synapse mainly on the medial horn grey matter, when it should say the lateral grey horn matter. Again, the 4th edition does not have this error.
There are other, smaller errors in figures (transporters showing Na moving in the wrong direction) that are correct in the 4th Edition.
Bottom Line- It's a good text, but every figure you look at you'll be wondering if it's correct or an error. It wastes your time. Get the 4th Edition.

Numerous errors and inconsistencies

This was the textbook used for my neuroscience class last semester and in studing with classmates who were using the 4th edition we discovered several factual inconsistencies between the two editions. I am not talking about new discoveries overturning old knowledge, I am talking about blatant factual errors.
For example, in one figure conserved across both editions, the same image showing Ca2+ ion flux into a dendrite is used to illustrate opposite neurological phenomenon.
Another example, in Chapter 22 the binding of SHH to PTC is said to up-regulate Gli-1 but then ten pages later it says that the binding of SHH to PTC maintains low Gli-1 levels.
Those are just two flaws that I caught but I very easily could have missed many more.
Oh, and one more thing. If you have any knowledge of cell biology, as any neuroscience student should, you will be seriously disappointed in this book. The cell bio explanations are so simplified as to be almost inaccurate and nearly useless in furthering your knowledge of the subject at a cellular level.

Useful introductory neuroscience

This was the text for a Medical Neuroscience class that was taught by Dr. Len White of Duke University (via Coursera). I found this text to be a very useful adjunct to the course and I can highly recommend it. Of greatest utility for me was the many illustrations as I am a visual learner. Also, there is a related adjunct website with a number of useful illustrations and the book came with the Sylvius neuroanatomy software.
