This book is an investigation into stateless law, illustrated by international arbitration regimes. It addresses key philosophical questions posed by international arbitration as a potential path to law beyond the state. It ascertains which dimensions of transnational legality arbitral regimes conform to, and what consequences follow from it.

The argument of this book is firmly rooted in contemporary legal positivism and is attentive to current debates regarding the rule of law to ponder legality without territory. A theory is suggested regarding the minimal conditions that transnational regimes must fulfil in order to legitimately and appropriately count as law. The theory is tested on various arbitral regimes. The book thus offers reflections on the extent to which legality and the rule of law can serve as a moral and political benchmark for transnational regimes, to assess the political morality of arbitration's current autonomy from states and what arbitration's claim for an increase in that autonomy implies.

Thomas Schultz is a Swiss National Science Foundation Fellow in the International Law Department of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He has worked in the fields of international dispute settlement, private international law, public international law, jurisprudence, and technology law. In 2010, he received the Prix Jubile of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences. He is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Dispute Settlement (OUP).

About the Author
Donald P. Gatley, PE, Fellow ASHRAE, is a 1954 mechanical engineering graduate of Vanderbilt University. His career includes 13 years with the Trane Company, 8 years in design/build mechanical contracting, and 30+ years in the practice of consulting engineering. Outside activities include service as chair of Georgia's building energy code committee and as president of the Southface Energy Institute. He is known for his work in the prevention and correction of building moisture problems, energy conservation in buildings, and with hotels. He is a recipient of the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award and two ASHRAE International Energy Awards. Gatley also authored the EPRI Cool Storage Ethylene Glycol Design Guide (1992), the EPRI Cool Storage Open Hydronic Systems Design Guide (1995) and two chapters of the Mold & Mildew Handbook published by the American Hotel and Motel Association (1991) and co-authored Moisture and Mildew Control (1992). He has written more than 30 articles on flow diagrams, central drinking water systems, the control of DX cooling coils, life-cycle cost of central chilled water plants, effective air-side design, gas phase filtration of exhaust air, thermal storage systems, quieting residential systems, moisture control in the home, and enhanced dehumidification systems. In 2003, he joined with Professors Sebastian Herrmann and Hans-Joachim Kretzschmar of the Department of Technical Thermodynamics, Zittau/Goerlitz University of Applied Sciences, Zittau, Germany for four psychrometric research projects: Determination of a Twenty-First Century Molar Mass for Dry Air Determination of Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Humid Air for Power-Cycle Calculations for PTB-Bericht RP-1485, Thermodynamic Properties of Real Moist Air, Dry Air, Steam, Water, and Ice for ASHRAE Real Humid Air Psychrometric Function Add-Ins named LibHuAirProp for Excel, MATLAB, Mathcad, and EES.

"Life in Ancient Egypt"ÿ

Adolf Erman did a very fine job on writing this book. It basically covers what it was like to live along the Nile in Ancient times. His writing is very easy to understand and I recommend it to teachers to read to their classes. Unlike some other books, this one does not just talk about the well known pharaohs but some that I have never even heard of. He also includes many special events. This book was the best I have ever read about Egyptology and covers everything anyone would need to know.

Enduring Quality

Erman wrote this book at the end of the 19th century and it is a testament to his scholarship that the work is still as relevant today despite all our advances in archeology. The preface describes the inundation of Egypt as happening in the authors time exactly as it did for the ancient egyptians (the Aswan High Dam was not built until the 1950's). Erman concentrated on the simple aspecs of daily life as represented in paintings and statuary and he succeeds in presenting an accessible but thoroughly presented account of Egyptian daily life at all strata from Slave to Pharaoh.

This is a book that any one with more than a passing interest in ancient Egypt should own. It covers a wide range of everyday activities as well as the public spheres of justice, agriculture, religion among many others. It is well written and easy to read. Some names are given using older spellings but there is a list of the more modern spellings at the beginning of the book. In general this book tries, and in my opinion succeeds, to present ancient Egypt as much more than just the place where the pyramids and tombs were built. This book with its depth of information is an excellent starting point for more modern analyses of the civilisation. Few texts can match the penetration into all aspects of the civilisation of ancient Egypt that this book accomplishes.

Paul Wittek’s The Rise of the Ottoman Empire was first published by the Royal Asiatic Society in 1938 and has been out of print for more than a quarter of a century. The present reissue of the text also brings together translations of some of his other studies on Ottoman history; eight closely interconnected writings on the period from the founding of the state to the Fall of Constantinople and the reign of Mehmed II. Most of these pieces reproduces the texts of lectures or conference papers delivered by Wittek between 1936 and 1938 when he was teaching at Université Libré in Brussels, Belgium. The books or journals in which they were originally published are for the most part inaccessible except in specialist libraries, in a period when Wittek's activities as an Ottoman historian, in particular his formulations regarding the origins and subsequent history of the Ottoman state (the "Ghazi thesis"), are coming under increasing study within the Anglo-Saxon world of scholarship.

An introduction by Colin Heywood sets Wittek's work in its historical and historiographical context for the benefit of those students who were not privileged to experience it firsthand. This reissue and recontextualizing of Wittek’s pioneering work on early Ottoman history makes a valuable contribution to the field and to the historiography of Asian and Middle Eastern history generally.

About the Author

Paul Wittek (1894--1978) was one of the leading Ottoman historians of his generation. After serving in the old k. u. k. Armee in Galicia, Italy and Turkey, and an eventful career in Austria, Turkey and Belgium, in 1949 he became the first holder of the Chair of Turkish at the University of London.

Colin Heywood has taught Middle Eastern history at a number of American universities and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he took courses with Wittek in the 1950s. He is currently a member of the Maritime Historical Studies Centre, University of Hull; his areas of active research include the early modern maritime history of the Mediterranean and the intellectual legacy of Wittek’s contributions to Ottoman history.

Pete McArdle hits a grandslam with these 18 short stories

No doubt about it, Pete McArdle, DDS is the Stephen King of dentistry. I laughed out loud while reading his collection of eighteen short stories. My mind reacted much the same way it does when looking at a Gahan Wilson cartoon. Don't know who Gahan Wilson is? Just Google his name. Pete McArdle meet Gahan Wilson. On the other hand, maybe Pete is more like Rod Serling. Black suit, skinny tie, slicked back hair, cigarette in hand. He's about to introduce you to another episode of the Twilight Zone. .Do you remember what it is like to stifle a laugh when you are not supposed to laugh. You are attending a funeral and everyone is somber, crying or speaking in low tones and here you are blowing snot bubbles out your nose because you can't contain yourself. That's what some of these stories do to you. Each story is a great read. Let me warn you that the stories are far beyond your first grade reader "See Spot Run." If you ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a masked dentist about to drill your teeth, just read "Wallace in Wonderland" and find out. Don't say I didn't warn you!

I don't recall ever describing literature that made me giggle as intelligent. Wallace in Wonderland and obviously it's author are. I was thoroughly entertained by references to all the contemporary culture I've experienced throughout my life being intertwined with my universal (I think) neurotic thoughts, fantasies and actual experiences. I truly hope this collection of short stories finds life in non-electronic form so my peers who may be technically challenged can enjoy it.

If you're looking for something to do with that pesty $5 bucks you've been dragging around, look no further. The stories collected here are witty and entertaining, and each one is elevated by Mr. McArdle's understanding of those fears and longings that make us so annoyingly human. Just read it.
