G. JACK BOLOGNA, BBA, JD, CFE, is President of Computer Protection Systems, Inc., and Associate Professor of Management at Siena Heights College. Among his numerous publications are The Accountant's Handbook of Fraud and Commercial Crime (Wiley), Forensic Accounting Handbook, and Handbook on Corporate Fraud. He is also editor of two newsletters: Forensic Accounting Review and Computer Security Digest. Mr. Bologna is a recipient of the Thomas J. Fitzgerald Award for significant contribution to the field of information security.

Robert J. Lindquist, BCOMM, CA, CFE, is CEO of Lindquist, Avey, Macdonald, Baskerville, Inc., a leading North American forensic and investigative accounting firm based in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was Partner and National Director of the forensic accounting services division of a "Big Six" accounting firm. In addition to writing and lecturing on forensic accounting, he has served as the Chairman of the National Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (1993).

Fraud Auditing and Forensic Accounting

This was not what one would expect from the title. There were no methodologies provided to research and detect fraud and very little in terms of accounting controls was addressed. The book is a collection of anecdotes and cases with very little practical information that transcends the most basic concepts. The book spends too much time discussing behavioral aspects of fraud as opposed to legitimate financial investigation. Overall, a huge disappointment.

An absolute must-have for any Sega (or Arcade) fan!

Unlike Nintendo, Sega has tragically too few books about their works, especially in English - and while the recently-released History of Sonic is likewise excellent, franchises such as that and Phantasy Star have (rightfully) been the subject of many forum posts, episodes of Retronauts & so on.

Hardcore Gaming 101 chose instead to focus on the Yu Suzuki arcade classics, and a handful of other titles/series - a great mix of popular & niche/cult classics. The meat of it is exactly what you come to expect from H101: while each entry might see only a few pages, it's jam-packed with all manner of history, from development details, port comparisons (including formats I was barely aware of), and really cool stuff like betas/unreleased titles, as well as relevant ROM hacks. The Sega fan community has its share of top-notch sites, but I don't think anyone other than H101 would've been nearly as thorough.

Those looking for an art book would likely have better luck with the few Japanese ones on Ebay, as the layout largely allocates its space for comparison shots, moreso than concept art - I was most appreciative of this personally, as it's fascinating watching several generations of console hardware struggle to replicate something AM2 accomplished with coin-ops back in 1985, for example. Likewise, a priority was clearly made to delve into every spin-off of any series discussed, revealing installments of both Alex Kidd & Shinobi I was previously unaware of.

Again, I applaud Kurt & co's decisions here, as this likely would've sold more copies as just another Sonic book, but instead I was able to finally have the mystery of Wonder Boy/Adventure Island/Monster World series etc explained (accomplished by a candid interview with the series creator), and learn about oddities like Typing Space Harrier.

...I can't believe we never got OutRun 3D over here. Anyway.

My only regret was reading it while traveling, as it's now falling apart on me - however, due to the overall quality (and low price) of the book, I was happy to order another copy upon my return...right after hunting down a copy of Super Fantasy Zone. Again, if you grew up with Sega, or are simply a fan of good games (arcade especially), do not pass on this.

Awesome compilation of retro classics!!

If you are a fan of the website then you know what to expect from this. The same love and attention from the site is brought to paper in a great collection. They list a great number of games and go into even greater detail about each one, and with plenty of pictures. If you enjoy playing or collecting games, old and new, then you will love this book! I'm looking forward to future collections and hope to see more on imports that never made it to North America!

Great reference guide on the AAA arcade titles SEGA was known for in their heyday. Each game features a lengthy, well written description (including information on sequels and console ports), crisp screenshots, and interesting facts/reviews. A must buy for any SEGA/arcade fan!

Bonus points for the Westone founder interview given all of the mystery around Wonderboy/Adventure Island and their sequels! Hope to see the more obscure release like Aurail in Volume 2!

In the year 1749, at the age of thirty-six, Junípero Serra left his position as a highly regarded priest in Spain for the turbulent and dangerous New World, knowing he would never return. The Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church both sought expansion in Mexico—the former in search of gold, the latter seeking souls—as well as entry into the mysterious land to the north called “California.”

Serra’s mission: to spread Christianity in this unknown world by building churches wherever possible and by converting the native peoples to the Word of God. It was an undertaking that seemed impossible, given the vast distances, the challenges of the unforgiving landscape, and the danger posed by resistant native tribes. Such a journey would require bottomless physical stamina, indomitable psychic strength, and, above all, the deepest faith. Serra, a diminutive man with a stout heart, possessed all of these attributes, as well as an innate humility that allowed him to see the humanity in native people whom the West viewed as savages.

By his death at age seventy-one, Serra had traveled more than 14,000 miles on land and sea through the New World—much of that distance on a chronically infected and painful foot—baptized and confirmed 6,000 Indians, and founded nine of California’s twenty-one missions, with his followers establishing the rest. The names of these missions ring through the history of California— San Diego, San Jose, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clara, and San Francisco—and served as the epicenters of the arrival of Western civilization, where millions more would follow, creating the California we know today.

An impoverished son, an inspired priest, and a potent political force, Serra was a complex man who stood at the historic crossroads between Native Americans, the often brutal Spanish soldiers, and the dictates of the Catholic Church, which still practiced punishment by flogging. In this uncertain, violent atmosphere, Serra sought to protect the indigenous peoples from abuse and to bring them the rituals and spiritual comfort of the Church even as the microbes carried by Europeans threatened their existence.

Beginning with Serra’s boyhood on the isolated island of Mallorca, venturing into the final days of the Spanish Inquisition, revealing the thriving grandeur of Mexico City, and finally journeying up the untouched California coast, Gregory Orfalea’s magisterial biography is a rich epic that cuts new ground in our understanding of the origins of the United States.

About the Author
Gregory Orfalea was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and educated at Georgetown University and the University of Alaska. He has held teaching positions at Georgetown, The Claremont Colleges, and at Westmont College. Orfalea is the author and editor of eight books, the most recent of which are the short story collection The Man Who Guarded the Bomb and Angeleno Days, which won the 2010 Arab American Book Award and has been named a Finalist for the PEN USA Award in Creative Nonfiction.

Where the "San" came from

This is a fabulous study of early California history in the late 18th century. You will be taken on a journey of discovery, secular quest, political struggle between Spanish administration & religious quest, and more importantly understand the end result: the suffering & Christian transformation of the aboriginal people who comprised the land we know as California. The primary character: Friar Junipero Serra was a deeply devoted aging Franciscan tasked as a missionary to bring the pagan natives into the fold of the Church and develop into loyal subjects of the Spanish empire. King Charles the III, recently diminished the power of the Jesuits (who typically were the missionaries), and looked to the Franciscan's to seek out and grow the Church & Empire.

The North American west course was vital to Spain's growth to build trade with the Philippines. Serra a self-flagellating pious Friar in his mid- 50's was assigned to lead the Franciscan effort to grow the Catholic religion and establish the Church in this new land. In spite of the local Spanish government and military disruptions - Serra was able to establish nine missions, and baptized 6000 people. He also converted the natives from nomads into herders & farmers. The new communities thrive with the new existence, but later many died from European disease with venereal disease being the leading cause of death. The Friars of course acted upon extreme measures to control the spread - locking up young women at night and flogging those in relationships. Serra worked himself to death eventually, but thought iron willed devotion planted the seeds of Cathoism which remains strong to this day in modern California.

The author did a great job developing this time into a very readable format that describes the tough character and will of Serra, and his very strong influence on American history.

Read the Story Behind that Sugar-Cube Mission You Made in Middle School

Every kid who grows up in the Bay Area has probably seen the statue of Junipero Serra along 280, as well as had the assignment of building a mission of one's choice out of sugar cubes. (My sister and I joked about starting a black market site when her kids hit the age: "I'll trade you a Mission Santa Barbara for a San Juan Capistrano.") But that was the extent of my knowledge.

Now that I live in WA State, when I heard about this book, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia and quickly put it on my to-read list. I'm glad I did! Author Gregory Orfolea has written a lyrical, sympathetic, and fascinating portrait of a brave and compassionate visionary who lived in exciting times. (The book reminded me several times of another favorite, Willa Cather's DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP.)

Can I say how glad I am that we're past the stage we were in when I was in grad school, where Colonialists = Vicious Murderers Who Did Everything Wrong and Natives = Utopian Residents in a State of Nature? Orfolea did an even-handed job representing the cultural factors at play on each side.

Having only seen Mission San Jose in Fremont, Serra's story made me want to schedule a road trip this summer to check out some of the other Serra-founded ones within reach, not to mention putting Mexico City on the bucket list.

Who knew that he only began his "Alta California" work when he was 56? (Take that, early retirement!)That he suffered for the rest of his life from a spider bite received when he landed in Veracruz, Mexico, upon reaching the New World? That male California Indians went around buck naked, and only added breechcloths after encounters with the Spanish? That explorer DeAnza was the one who noticed and marked "El Palo Alto," which I drove past every stinking day for years?

Lots of goodies in here. If you like CA history, the Spanish Conquest, and sympathetic Catholic history, give this book a try.

What was California like BEFORE the Gold Rush?

I grew up in California and went East to college. Our home was in the Sacramento Valley, near the Mother Lode, and my great grandparents on both sides settled in Santa Barbara in the 1800s. In New England it is taken for granted that America's early history was all home-grown and a local phenomenon. California, they assumed, had the Beach Boys ..... and that was about it.

But I've cared about Junipero Serra since I was a little kid, visiting relatives near the Santa Barbara Mission. Too many years later, my wife and I have loved to travel. Often, although I'm not very religious, we find ourself walking in Father Serra's footsteps. We've been to his birthplace in Petra, Mallorca, to Baja California churches such as the one in Loreto, and of course to most of the California missions. My most recent birthday was spent on an over-night at Hearst's Hacienda at Camp Hunter Liggett, in the shadow of Serra's third mission. A month ago we enjoyed every station of the Huntington Library's Father Serra exhibit. Of course I purchased Professor Hackel's history ("Junipero Serra") and quickly consumed it.

"Journey to the Sun" explores Junipero Serra's life and what it meant to California. I could feel the Franciscan's pain on the rough and risky trails he chose, and Author Orfalea makes very clear the devotion that drove Serra forward. He paints a vivid picture of what California was like at the very time New England was holding it's American Revolution. One chapter is devoted almost entirely to describing how the native people lived BEFORE the arrival of these Spanish holy men and soldiers.

This is not a "revisionist history". The missionaries meant not to subjugate the Indians, but to save their souls. They were also frail human beings who failed in some important ways. Junipero Serra struggled against unimaginable hurdles and hardships. Professor Orfalea brings it all to life.

A Great Book Documenting A Landmark Film

How can a person complain about "too much making"? After all, the name of the book is: "The MAKING of Final Fantasy". I personally would have loved to read more articles on the VERY tech-y side of creating the characters skin textures, but that would have probably bored and confused general readers. I was expecting the transcription of the dialouge to occupy a chunk of the book, but luckily, it doesn't. You might need a magnifying glass to read it anyway. Excellent display of pre-production work and funny "secrets", like cameos of chocobos and The "Gooch" himself(director Hironobu Sakaguchi) in CG form! Mr. Sakaguchi also provides the foreword. The book is lite in text, but the pictures do all of the talking for you.

Nice companion to the movie

[[VIDEOID:30203351]]When the movie first came out, it showcased to the world what computer graphics is capable of, especially on the human animation and acting part.

This book provides a nice look into how Final Fantasy The Spirits Within was created.

The concept art included are mainly designs of vehicles, sets, props and storyboards. Since this is a "Making of" book, it talks extensively about how the art is related back to the story. Among them are subjects like creating flames, flares, using motion capture for acting, composition and other general production techniques.

Character design is lacking in the book. Even though several pages are devoted to each character, there wasn't any concept art on how they come up with the characters. All that is included are the bio stats, film stills, and 3D rendered posed models.

This is a great book companion to the movie.

Bewildering diversity is the very essence of India, observes novelist and columnist Tharoor (The Great Indian Novel) in this engaging collection of essays, which tries to reconcile the country's clashing traditions with progress and liberalism. Hinduism's promiscuous openness to other beliefs and cultures makes it a model of secular tolerance, he argues, though Hindu fundamentalist bigotry is his favorite target. Tharoor also insists that ancient Indian science anticipated quantum mechanics, and praises his home state of Kerala for raising female literacy rates. (In a rare nostalgic note, he mourns the demise of the sari, then fences with a backlash of critical e-mail responses from pants-wearing women.) Most of all, he celebrates India's compatibility with the global economy, a stance that occasionally shades into business boosterism. Many pieces are drawn from Tharoor's columns and feature quick, sketchy takes on Indian cultural touchstones, from political corruption to Bollywood to cricket; his themes tend to be repeated rather than developed. About the Author
Shashi Tharoor was born in London and brought up in Bombay and Calcutta. He has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the International Herald Tribune, the Times of India, and Foreign Affairs. A human rights activist and winner of a Commonwealth Writers Prize, he is currently a member of the Indian Parliament and lives in New Dehli, India.

A great book for non Indians too

I wanted to know a bit more about Indian culture and Indian history and I love this book. It's so well written. You must have some basic knolwedge of Indian history to understand it though. If you don't know who Nehru was and what the "partition" was you need to read some books before this one.
The book helped me to discover many facets of the Indian culture and society: the importance of secularism (and the current threats), the basic tenets of hinduism, the difference between north and south, the passion for cricket, the odd habit of changing cities' names, the use of the sari (or the lack of use), etc.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing more about India.

Must read for NRIs

This book is a must read for Non Resident Indians. Mr. Tharoor has perfectly portrayed India in a way NRIs would manifest their experiences of their home country. Though the book is not targeted only for Indians, it has few historical & personal references that only a true Indian can understand.

The book starts with little bit of Indian history talking about "People who made my India" that includes noted Indians from all sects including politics, cricket & bollywood. The author also provides a glimpse of India's culture (spirituality, traditional family values) & tourism (experiences at Ajanta & Ellora caves, Ayurvedic resort in Kerala) followed by India's progress in this 21st century (call centers, cellphone surge). Since Mr. Tharoor has been associated with the United Nations, the facts about India's growth, outlined in the book, truly suggest that India is the 21st century's emerging power.

I really enjoyed the chapter on India's cricket legend, Sunil Gavaskar, who was my hero too when growing up. It is nostalgic the way Mr. Tharoor has written about the "little master".

This is a must read for all Indians living outside their own home country.

Pleasant Patriotism

I adore Tharoor's erudite and amusing writing. This book feels like home with its loving description of all that matters - cricket, family, community, cinema, history, religion and politics - in that order. The author's pet theme is the ostensibly unwieldy yet absurdly functional pluralism fed by a range of coalition memberships - geographies, cricket solidarities and common political antipathies.

I love that Tharoor describes his India as an individual experience rather than an objective concept. Tharoor subtly endorses the thumping progressive new Indians with his metaphor of an elephant who became a tiger - suggesting provocatively that the vulgarly ostentatious 'five star culture' is more authentic than the discreet opulence of the club culture. However, his intense nostalgia quite clear in the subtext of every syllable - the longing for the old names Madras and Bombay, the self-conscious diginity of Nehruvian democracy and the portrayal of St. Stephens as a modern Nalanda of sorts!

Yet, there is nothing fatalistic or too precious about Tharoor - he denounces superstition and horsocopes and doesn't mind writing that as a man he'd like to see women in elegant saris. It's the sort of nice nationalism that warms one without being too jarring or jingoistic.

Looks great, but buy only if you've beat all the games on Big Boss difficulty

The book quality is fantastic, with superior paper and ink used during printing. I'll knock it a few stars mainly because the story is fairly incoherent unless you are a true MGS fan (and even then it's very abbreviated) and the artwork is abstracted to the point of being equally muddled (characters look identical, art style changes from panel to panel). Still, the price is right for 24 issues worth of content and it looks great on the bookshelf.

Great for Metal Gear Solid Fans

Metal Gear Solid Omnibus is a collection of the entire run of the comic series based on MGS 1 and 2. The comics are very fateful to the original source material, and take dialogue directly from the games. New dailogue has also been added and some scenes and codec conversations have been removed. Obiously the games are too long for everything to be included so this is understandable. The art is drawn by Ashley Wood who is mostly known for his work on the hand-drawn cutscenes shown in MGS: Portable Ops and the recently releaed MGS: Peace Walker. His art works extremely well with the script and it really does it job by telling the story of the games. Long time fans will likely apreciate this collection the most and if you have little experience with the games, then this book will likely not make as much sense to you. Overall, this book is great piece to add to a Metal Gear Solid fan's collection. I recommend it.

Good art but the writing...

I enjoyed this book but I cannot honestly give it a 5 star rating. The story is hard to follow due to the art and the fact that the dialogue was shortened from the games. If you've played the games then the story will come together but I can see outsiders having a problem with some of the scenes. The book is a buy for any fan and the art is wonderful and unique. I really like this collection, it is put together very well, it just lacks some definition.

Transform your life and heal!

I finally finished reading Eastern Body Western Mind by Anodea Judith. As I am a realist and an empiricist, this book appealed to me because it dives deep into the connections of Western psychology and Eastern philosophy.

Each chapter was incredible, with many 'a-ha' moments where the murky became clear and epiphanies of greater universal understanding abounded. This is a great book, but not exactly an easy read. I would place it at the Masters level of college texts, as it is packed with powerful citations backed by sound research.

It is a generally accepted fact that roughly 85% of Americans grow up in a dysfunctional family with experiences of abuse or neglect, which means that this book applies to 85% of you who are reading this post.

It is the sum of our life experiences that form who we are and the patterns we live by. If your patterns aren't working for you and you keep finding that you often make the same life mistakes that leave you unhappy, unfulfilled and starting over, it definitely warrants a deeper look into personal healing.

If you have anything in your life that you feel is giving you trouble and you feel stuck on, I highly suggest reading this book, but again it is not an easy read. Even with my advanced educational level and ability to comprehend complex subject matter, I found it to be a challenging read because is it not a passive activity. Once the words are read, the brain goes to work.

Eastern Body Western Mind is not just a book to read, it is a 'work book' for healing the soul's wounds accumulated over a life time; learning how to live in a healthier, more balanced and self loving way.

The content is so tightly packed and so powerfully written that I found I had to take a lot of time after reading each chapter to digest the information, considering how it might apply to my life experiences and traumas as I moved towards recovery. With each chapter, you work through deep wounds that surface and emotional healing work takes time.

However, it is well worth the time investment and much less expensive than years of weekly therapy that never seem to 'cure' you because if you are cured, the therapist looses a client. There is something powerful about yoga and Vedic philosophies. Once you release and let go of things in a healthy way, they don't return to haunt you, they are truly gone and you can proudly stand up to say, "I AM HEALED!".

This ONE BOOK, was more useful to me in helping to resolve my own internal issues than all the western psychology that has been offered to me combined in my life time. With this book, I was able to take my recovery into my own hands and heal in my own way.

The book took me more than 6 months to read because each chapter brought up so many issues I thought I had already processed and dealt with. I may have, but never so deeply and mindfully with a focus on healing myself as a whole; body, soul, mind and spirit.

After reading this book, I am now able to both ground myself and tap into universal connectivity and consciousness for limitless possibilities. I can pull that universal energy down through my chakras to manifest anything I can conceive of. I worked on the areas that needed attention with a new awareness. I know where I still need to keep working.

I also know that now it is time to get out into the world and start using my new knowledge to connect, to grow, to expand and to love again. #Love and the heart are where everything meets and more growth becomes possible.

I have made some massive changes in my life that I never thought possible 2 years ago, or even a year ago. Each day I become a better person. Each day I am more healed. It has been emotionally rough and all consuming at times, but I am glad that I put so much effort into seeking out my own way of healing and recovery.

In finishing the book, I feel like I have reached the top of a big mountain of s*** that I can now flush, like a toilet, back down into the earth beneath me, which acts as fertilizer for the trees and the earth that grounds me at a higher altitude of existence than I have ever experienced before.

I have leveled the playing field onto higher ground, raising myself up and learning in the process what it really means to "let go of what no longer serves you".

Because of Eastern Body Western Mind, I now understand myself differently, I understand others differently, I understand the world differently and I understand the universe differently. I have traversed through the depths of massive multiple traumas and grief, emerging from what seemed to be an endless tunnel of dark emotional pain, into a new light of being and a healthier way of living.

It is my greatest hope that others in the world read this book and find their own way of healing and transforming; moving from darkness into the light and sadness into the happiness of enlightened living in a purposeful way.

Required reading for westerners seeking deeper spiritual meaning

The only criticism I have of this book is that it wasn't long enough! Truly. When I read this book, I immediately pulled out my pencil and started to take copious notes in the margin, underlining, etc. I was captivated throughout.

Anyone who comes from a western culture and has an interest in understanding what the chakra system is and how it is related to our lives at every stage needs to read this book. Judith does a superb job of merging the chakra systems with traditional western psychology concepts and the lifespan. She seamlessly combines and compares eastern and western concepts using charts, graphics, and detailed descriptions. The main thrust of the book is that we experience various life traumas at different stages, and they affect corresponding chakras, creating deficiencies or excesses in how we channel energy (cope). Most importantly she gives concrete strategies for healing each chakra and therefore, connecting to our highest spiritual purpose.

A deeper knowledge of oneself

I purchased this book when I was in a sea of confusion and standing in crossroads about my life. It provided great insight to dark corners that I had even forgotten they existed, but that were playing a great role in my personal affairs and stood in the way to achieving my goals. I use it as a guide for my path in life and often refer back to it when things are not going the right way. Since I purchased it the first time, I have purchased it again and again as a present for people who are dear to me. Highly recommended!
