Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as "brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women" had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. Ali is up-front about having lied about her background in order to obtain her citizenship, which led to further controversy in early 2006, when an immigration official sought to deport her and triggered the collapse of the Dutch coalition government. Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh's death, her voice is forceful and unbowed—like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion. 8-page photo insert. A vivid chronicle of a triumphant escape from cultural confinement

Autobiographies often suffer from late-life authorship--a time when the fires are damped and the events foreshortened by time. This one--by a woman still in her thirties--is an exception to nearly every rule of the genre. Not least for its electrifying readability: it consumed every free moment of the two days it took to finish it. Putting it down was simply not an option.

This book will grab your imagination like no other, transplant you into a world you have probably never known, and introduce you to the intimate world of a muslim family swept by circumstance all over Africa, Arabia, and Europe. The complex interaction of tribes, clans, cultures, extended families and nations (and their consequences) isn't dryly analyzed, it is woven into a personal drama with the momentum of a locomotive. The love of family rides perilously over the jarring railbed of refugee life, of ancient and modern Islamic conflicts, all of it recounted with real compassion in beautifully clear English. This multilingual immigrant needs no ghostwriter.

Unlike the collection of editorial essays which comprised "The Caged Virgin", "Infidel" is a consistently focused narrative of a spectacularly eventful life launched almost inadvertantly into an unparalleled adventure in moral courage. But there's far more here than a clash-of-cultures story well told. There is no targeted rush toward a predestined liberation. The revelatory discovery of western freedoms comes late in the book and gathers like a slow-motion sunrise. Only in the final chapters does she defect from Muslim culture, graduate from the University of Leiden, become a Dutch legislator, a target of Islamic terrorists, and an incendiary revolutionary for Muslim womens' rights.

More than simply discovering western libertarian values, she shows a deep and critical understanding of their history, how they've shaped the modern world, and shows their prognosis for dealing with the festering problem of Europe's Islamic subculture. Her extraordinary life seems more an ongoing work in progress than a settled iconographic career. She has recently moved to America--the adopted home of another famously eloquent and consequential revolutionary: Tom Paine.

This is a fantastic description of life in Islam. Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains in very honestly what she has had to deal with in her life. As an ex muslim myself, she is a brave example for the rest of us women struggling with the threats and violence of Islam. This is a must read book for those who do not have the time or patience to study Islam and Islamic culture. It should be mandatory reading for High School Students in the west. Anyone who has to risk their lives to tell the truth is revolutionary. These days the truth is a revoluntionary act and Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a pioneer and my hero.

A most remarkable book.

Every now and then, something truly remarkable is written. This book falls into that category. I have read very few books which hit me as hard as this book did.

This is a remarkable woman. She has crossed an impassable divide, and has been able to reach the other side--after considerable suffering, work, and tears. Her journey has not yet ended. I would imagine much more awaits her. She seems to be fated to say what many do not wish to hear.

How well does anyone in the west understand Islam, and all the things it does to people? Do we really understand female genital mutilation, beaten women, arranged marriages, the compuslive need to hide the feminine, and the complete loss of individual freedom? Americans still don't have a clue. This book makes a very real effort to explain a few things. It is painful, but important reading.

One can read the various books on Islam--with great value. This book makes it personal, and painful. It is time the west came to its senses, and faced reality. It is not "one world," all cultures are not equal in value, and the individual matters much more than the collective living in darkness.

On a more mundane level, the book is well-written, gripping, heart wrenching, powerful, painful, touching, and impossible to put down. Read it, and you, too, will feel its remarkable value--and message.

I wish this wonderful woman well . She has done so very much to open our eyes.

It only takes a few seconds for you to realize that the author is affiliated with the site www.biggerpockets.com . Oh great another real estate investing guru who just so happens to funnel you into his site! But what happens when you get to the site? What services do you have to pay for to get real estate investing Information? The same thing that happens as you continue to read the book, you star to say Wow This is great information! This is better then most of the top books on real estate investing, actually explaining "how" to get started and actually steps of action to take. As I read and explored the site I realized this book is amazing and the author knows what he is talking about and actually wants to help instead of asking me to sign up for a week long crash course on making millions of dollars in real estate. Does the author say it's easy to become rich over night? No he doesn't! He shows how any average person can get involved in rental property investments. This book is one of the most comprehensive books on the topic. I would recommend this book to people who actually want to learn and get into real estate investing. This is one of the few books that is not only a good introduction but also has a ton of information for seasoned real estate investors as well. I was truly amazed and to think I almost skipped over this book because I thought it was one of those real estate scams! Great book with great information.

Great Insights & Easy Read!

I can't speak for how this book will be perceived by experienced real estate investors, but I know that for myself, as someone with relatively little prior knowledge of the business, this book was extremely informative. After giving a lot of general information about real estate investing, the book takes you through the entire real estate investing process in pretty good detail, from analyzing deals, to submitting offers, to obtaining financing, and eventually to how to manage your properties after the purchase. This is just a great read with tons of information, presented in an easy-to-understand way. If you're new to rental property investing, you will absolutely learn plenty by reading this book, and because of the somewhat "chronological" layout of the book with regards to the investing process, it makes it easy to go back and find particular information quickly. So this will make a great reference tool even after you've read it.

Nothing more than common sense

Here is my opinion - and that's just it, it's an opinion, and it's personal, and you don't have to agree with it.
I don't mean to be harsh, but I *think* this is a pretty much useless book written by the next guru trying to sell you something and market his website.
There are no statistics, no scientific data, no analysis.. just random stories like "I was sitting at a Chinese restaurant, I opened my fortune cookie, and it told me that I'm meant for greater things so I decided to invest in real estate."
I'm sorry, but if you're going to suggest people throw all their life savings into one basket, you should maybe give them some hard facts.
What's the percentage of people that fail in the rental property business?
What is your likelihood to succeed? How about looking at different locations and comparing the different markets? Renting in Manhattan is not the same as renting in the Middle-of-Nowhere in Kansas.
What exact practical steps do you take to evict a tenant? Do you need to hire a lawyer and how much will it cost?
How do you calculate the amount of time that your rental property is likely to be empty? Do you have a formula at hand that takes into account the type of property, the location, the general type of population in the neighborhood...?
How do you come up with the legal nonsense that needs to be included in your lease agreement?

I did not find exact and precise answers to any one of these questions.
Instead I was reading about a guy who had loads of luck and managed to build his rental property empire.
Good for you! And the advice that you give is useful but it's also nothing more than common sense.

I am leaving this bad review because I am very disappointed.
I was expecting a lot more in terms of data, analysis, and exact steps towards a practical solution. Instead I got a lot of general bla-bla-bla with with a few anecdotes.
A piece of free advice from me - if you're going to invest in property, do your own research and don't think it's as easy and as glamorous as some people might make it sound.

I must say if you read one Dr.Ben book you read them all. However the African Origins of Major Western Religion is on of Dr.Ben's greatest works. Dr.Ben explains the ideologies of Christianity,Islam, and Judism confronting the fact that all of these religions are based on African Spiritual concepts. He shows in an easy to understand manner the stolen concepts that europeans have used for their imperilistic benefit. This book will make you question why it is you believe what you believe as well as where do you stand as a human being in the universe. I highly recommend this book to all students of African history, and Religious concepts.

Another classical researched body of work by DR. Yosef ben Yochannan. he deals with the early african origins of judaism (hebrew faith) Christianity and islam. He shows how the ten commandments were extracted from the 147 confessions so called "negative confessions" as well as african folklore nad mythology that went into the making of these so called "western religion" he deals with early african character who played critical roles in the early development of "judaism", christianity and islam. such characters as st. Cyprian, Tertullian, St. Augustine. Bilal ibn rabah, Al-jahiz and Ibrahim al Mahdi. this work is in depth and well researched. it should be read by all, but of course only by some.

Yosef A.A. (Alfredo Antonio) Ben-Jochannan (born 1918 in Ethiopia; known simply as "Dr. Ben" to his students and readers) is an American historian specializing in Africa.

He writes in the Introduction to this 1970 book (reprinted in 1991), "(T)he main purpose of this work is to show that there is another phase to the greatness that is still 'MOTHER AFRICA,' the MOTHER OF MANKIND, a sort of 'GARDEN OF EDEN,' also to provide another perspective in Africa's major contribution to world civilization which may well assist in rearranging the present and future tenets of religious thought."

About the Author
Aaron Hillegass, a former employee at NeXT and Apple, has nearly two decades experience programming and teaching Objective-C, Cocoa, and, more recently, iOS. Aaron is co-author of Objective-C Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide and iOS Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide. In 2001, Aaron founded Big Nerd Ranch and began developing intensive courses that teach programming in a focused, distraction-free environment. Big Nerd Ranch now offers courses around the world as well as consulting and software development.

Adam Preble learned Cocoa programming from the first edition of this book and after ten years in the software industry, joined Big Nerd Ranch to write Mac and iOS software as a consultant. If you are moving from iOS to OS X GET THIS BOOK.

I am halfway through the book and already I can tell this is going to be my favorite programming book. The guys from Big Nerd Ranch are clearly writing about what they know from a practical standpoint. There is enough deep theory to provide depth but also enough step-by-step to keep you going.

I am coming from an iOS programming background so a lot of the material is similar to that, but when you get to bindings prepare yourself for a completely different paradigm.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough! Good job guys!

Still the gold standard for Mac programming instruction!

I'm excited!!

If BNR was all about marketing, this book would be titled, "Swiftian Cocoa Programming for OS X Using Swift!," because that's where the Mac/iOS world is heading, and rather quickly. But instead, the title is much more subdued, retaining the naming pattern from the first edition (published in 2002), modified only when Apple changed the OS name from "Mac OS X" to just "OS X." But make no mistake: this book is all Swift, all the time.

This book is also greatly expanded from that first edition, growing from the original 383 pages to the current 533, and from 27 chapters to the current 37, reflecting the tremendous growth in the platform itself.

What have remained the same from that first edition, though, are the clear instructions and the production values of the physical book itself. Some books (I'm looking at you, Harbison & Steele, also in its fifth edition) move to cheaper, thinner paper, and a more sepia-coloured page as time goes on. (H&S still has great content; it's just tough to read.) The BNR book has stayed with a heavier stock paper and a bright white page. Quality instruction in a quality product.

I'm still near the beginning of this just-released book, and will update this review as I progress further when time allows, but it's already clear to me that the high standards of the previous books have been retained here as well.

I've loved their instructional style ever since I took the Cocoa class in person years ago (for "Panther" 10.3), and I'm thrilled to see it carry on.

Swift+Cocoa, here I come!

I haven't read this cover to cover. In fact, with a lot of jumping around, I've only read maybe 100 pages. Keep that in mind.

PROS
- One of the few Swift+OSX books on the market.
- Written in a concise voice to it's intended audience.
- Ramps up well for those not coming from ObjC (Java, C, C++ for me).
- Separates topics well for those going a la carte.
- Decent index, sadly a bit rare in other books.

CONS
Apple has divided its kingdom along two axes: ObjCSwift and iOS8Yosemite. I'd love it if someone could spend a chapter explaining these subtleties. BNR does not. Somewhat related, bridging gets only a brief explanation. And unfortunately, it's one of my key interests.

The end was a little too unrealistic for me

I was excited for this one, but SPOILER Alert.

it is basically a 90% trip through the Amazon jungle with your piranha death, and a local tribe attack
and at the end we finally got to the good part, which I am sorry but it surprised me, that
these guys can influence peoples thoughts but cannot protect their own vessel from intrusion.
For me that was just to hard to swallow, there was some explanation, but I did not buy it.
Overall a quick read, but in my opinion not as good as the first book in the series.

This second book by John Sneeden is even better than the first

This second book by John Sneeden is even better than the first. I cannot say much as I do not wish to give spoilers. I can say, I hope this series continues a long time. Along the lines of David L. Golemon and James Rollins and just as good! Be sure you read book 1 The signal first. If you do you will be reading him for some time.

Lost characters, Lost direction

John Sneeden did not seem to know what to do with his plot. This is the second book in series that began with "The Signal". I enjoyed reading the first book and ordered the second book, "The Portal" with interest and to see how the plot would continue. The characters are likeable and the plot development was reasonable and then "the wheels came off". The main character has been built up to be this competent, well-trained operative that can handle anything. He made so many obvious mistakes in judgement in this second book that as a reader, I kept thinking what's wrong with him? How could he be this stupid and unaware? There were plenty of situations that unfolded and kept me turning the pages to see who would get killed off next. The one time in the book where there is some "sexual attraction or mild sexual content" between two characters happens at a point in the story where you could care less except to think what a ridiculous time to have this happen in the storyline. The final premise of fallen angels/aliens I found to be absurdly disappointing. It's too bad, I did enjoy the first book but can not recommend proceeding on to this next book.
