About the Author

Michael F. Opitz

A former elementary school teacher and reading specialist, Dr. Michael F. Opitz is currently a professor of reading at the University of Northern Colorado where he teaches undergraduate and graduate literacy courses and works with doctoral candidates. He is the author and coauthor of several books on such topics as comprehensive and English language learners, ways to enhance listening comprehension, cross proficiency levels, means for reaching readers, strategies for guided reading, literature and language play for phonological awareness, and literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Michael is also an author of a supplemental reading program aimed at engaging boys with reading, a supplemental literacy program, an intervention program tailored to children who need additional help with reading, and a reading program designed to help children who need additional help with reading among others. His articles appear in professional and trade journals. Dr. Opitz works in selected classrooms in the US and abroad planning, teaching and evaluating demonstration lessons focused on different aspects of literacy; provides in-service and staff development sessions; serves as a consultant; and presents at state and international conferences.

James A. Erekson

Dr. James A. Erekson is an assistant professor of reading at the University of Northern Colorado where he teaches undergraduate and graduate literacy courses and works with doctoral candidates. He has extensive K-12 classroom experience, including first through third grade literacy teaching, and running a middle school reading intervention program. Dr Erekson’s professional background in Learning and Development has helped him stay focused on the needs of learners in educational settings. He has also taught college-level language courses, with experience in five languages besides English. His research publications appear in national and regional literacy journals, he provides in-service and staff development sessions, serves as a consultant, and presents at state and international conferences.

Dorothy Rubin

Dorothy Rubin has a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from Rutgers University, and she has a Ph. D. from John Hopkins University. She has written many textbooks for teacher education and for student learning. She has also taught reading through the elementary grades. She is an authority in all aspects of reading instruction as well as vocabulary development. Currently, she is a Professor Emerita with the College of New Jersey.

Arrived on time and in the condition promised. This particular book is awesome and after two other classes with a different book group, this particular book blows them all away. It is comprehensive and is a definite "KEEP" book for my teacing shelves

About the Author
Stanley Baran earned his Ph.D. in communication research at the University of Massachusetts after taking his M.A. in journalism at Pennsylvania State University. He taught for 4 years at Cleveland State University, eventually moving to the University of Texas. He led the Department of Radio-TV-Film’s graduate program for 6 of his 9 years in Austin and won numerous teaching awards there, including the AMOCO Teaching Excellence Award as the best instructor on that 40,000-student campus, the College of Communication’s Teaching Excellence Award as that college’s outstanding professor, and Utmost Magazine’s Student Poll for best instructor. Dr. Baran moved to San Jose State University in 1987 and served 9 years as chair of the Department of Television, Radio, Film, and Theatre. At SJSU he was named President’s Scholar as the University’s outstanding researcher. Now, he teaches at Bryant University, where he is the founding chair of that school’s Communication Department. Among his other experiences shaping this book are service as a Fulbright Scholar and his many years of professional activity in audience research, writing for radio, and producing for television. Dr. Baran has published 10 books and scores of scholarly articles and sits or has sat on the editorial boards of six journals. His work has been translated into half-a-dozen languages. He is a skilled boater and a tenor saxophonist for the Wakefield, Rhode Island, Concert Band. He is married to Susan Baran and has two very cool children, Matt and Jordan, who grew up much faster than he wanted.

A new copy of this textbook does NOT come with a Connect access code. No other review seems to mention this, and the book's description is deceptively unclear. Just a heads up to anyone else who is unfortunate enough to have a professor that is using the online program. The greedy publisher is more than happy to charge you $145 for a new book and then another $65 for the code separately. Do not pay full price for this.

About the Author
Suzanne Parker's book Viral was a winner of the Kinereth Gensler Book Award from Alice James Books. Viral is collection of poems about the death of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi and has been included in the American Library Association's "Rainbow List" of recommended books of 2014. Her poems have appeared in Hunger Mountain, Redivider, Drunken Boat, Ghost Town, Barrow Street, Cimarron Review, Rattapallax, and numerous other journals. She has also published creative non-fiction in the travel anthology Something to Declare: Good Lesbian Travel Writing, edited by Gillian Kendall (University of Wisconsin Press, 2009 ). She is a winner of the Alice M. Sellars Award from the Academy of American Poets, was a Poetry Fellow at the Prague Summer Seminars, has received fellowships and scholarships from Sarah Lawrence College Summer Writers Seminar and Prairie Schooner and has had her work nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Suzanne directs the creative writing program at Brookdale Community College in NJ and is the managing editor for MEAD: A Magazine of Literature and Libations.

Applying art to the wound

Suzanne Parker is a great poet--my personal favorite--even without this book. But the book, which examines the story of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University student who committed suicide after his roommate web-cast his intimate encounter with another man, takes her work to a new level. Viral shows us in the best way how art can respond to tragedy--how we really NEED art to respond to tragedy, to give grief a voice, and to help us to make some kind of sense out of the unfathomable, terrible harm humans are capable of doing to each other.

A Testament to the Human Spirit

Written in the framework of Willett's experience with brain injury, this book is about so much more than that. It's a testament to the human spirit - the sheer will and determination of a man, and the unconditional loyalty and love of his wife and son. Willett's story will make you cry, and then laugh, and ultimately realize that within each of us is the ability to move from the depths of despair to living the life of our dreams. And most of us won't have the added challenge of re-learning to speak and read while we're doing it. Every once in a while, you hear of a person or read a story that's so inspirational that it changes your entire perspective. This is one of those stories, and Willett is one of those people. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Les C. Wicker is currently the senior minister of Delavan United Church of Christ in Delavan, Wisconsin. He previously served congregations in Florida and North Carolina. A member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Wicker received his Ph.D. with a specialization in Marriage and the Family from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is also a graduate of Greensboro College (B.A.) and Duke University Divinity School (M.Div.).

Pastors Need Resources

With the number of divorces in our country, every minister of a local Church needs resources with which to help couples look at their upcoming marriage. Les Wicker has written a helpful book and guide for pastors and couples. I commend it those who care enough to sit down with couples and talk, not just about the wedding service, but about preparing for a life of commitment, giving, forgiving, honoring, and focusing more on the head, heart, and faith fo person to whom you will be married, instead of the color of the flowers for the wedding. It is an excellent resource !
