Reiteration of the same old stuff

Published in 1971 at the peak of the "ancient astronaut" craze. It seems the author did little of his own research-- he just borrowed stuff from many different sources and slapped it all together. Nonetheless, most of it is quite fascinating, if it's true that is. The problem, however, is that there's no index or bibliography, which makes it nearly impossible to check his sources or refer back to anything in his book-- which really bugs me, hence 3 stars. Also, the author could've put less pointless garbage in his book: for example, whenever he begins a chapter he starts off with excerpts from non-related science fiction stories. This book could've been better. As an alternative I recommend Erich von Daniken, at least Mr. Daniken gets to the point.

About the Author

Howard Wainer, Distinguished Research Scientist at the National Board of Medical Examiners

Howard Wainer is a statistician and author; Medical Illuminations is his 20th book. His first two medical books (technical works in pediatrics) were published almost 40 years ago. He has been working primarily on medical topics since 2001 as the Distinguished Research Scientist of the National Board of Medical Examiners. At various times in his career he has taught at Princeton, The University of Chicago and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He has a PhD from Princeton and is a fellow in the American Statistical Association and the American Educational Research Association. He has been the recipient of many awards for his broad ranging research and has served internationally on many editorial boards of leading statistical journals as well as a consultant to both government and industry. He has also written a column in the magazine Chance since 1990.

an insightful and indensable guide to the management of healthcare information

As author of some twenty noteworthy books and innumerable articles, Howard Wainer can be considered the foremost current authority on the graphical representation of statistical data, a crucial field in modern information processing and display. His most recent work, Medical Illuminations, is, in my view, the most important of all and imperative reading for anyone interested in the management of healthcare information...and who isn’t or shouldn’t be, especially as we enter a new era of Healthcare options? For the expert faced with preparing charts for private electronic records or public display on the internet and all manner of print media as well as for the patient determined to decipher them, Medical Illuminations is a must read, a book that will cause you to rethink old assumptions and formulate new ones based less on convention than on evidence, informed by an enlightening reevaluation of the statistical, visual, and verbal expression of data. The range of topics is incredibly wide--running from cancer detection and diabetes monitoring to hip-surgery choices and psychiatric evaluation-- and the lessons are universal, highlighted visually by bulleted, numbered, italicized principles. Moreover and most of all, the book is as enjoyable to read as it is informative. Wainer is as much an engaging humanist as he is an accomplished scientist, drawing on metaphor and analogy to verbally illuminate his statistical demonstrations and visual displays and sprinkling his own lucid prose with quotes and quips from others sources, such as Will Rogers‘s adage applied to misleading data displays: “What we don’t know won’t hurt us, it’s what we do know that ain’t.” Of course, with healthcare issues, what you don’t know will also harm you (literally and figuratively), and Medical Illuminations goes a long way in remedying that lack. Written with great wit and wisdom, this is a wonderful book, an insightful and indispensable (dare I say “illuminating”) guide to the management of healthcare information.

Well supported illumination.

This is an interesting and reflective look at how statistical measures around medical issues can be presented well. It's beautifully presented and printed. If you're reading it on a kindle you'd want to read it on one of the newer paperwhite screens or similar. There's too much illustration in here to enjoy on one of the older grey screen kindles.

The title for me brought Oscar Wilde's classic quip to mind; "he uses statistics rather like a drunken man uses a lamp post- for support, not for illumination."

In this book Wainer shows us how to use statistics both for support and for illumination. He shows how certain graphic presentations work and how some don't. He reminds us that "work?" begs the question "work for what?" and then shows how to build graphic that can illuminate a topic. As he says the very best graphics encapsulate something major, and make us think about it in a new way. As John Tukey put it, "The greatest value of a graph is when it forces us to see what we never expected."

He's excellent in Chapter 8 on the mathematics of scrrening- and the problems of false negatives and false positives and how the true psoitives of a low incidence disease can easily become swamped by the numbers of false positives in the genral population. It's an old message about screening- but still the maths of it and its implications are not well enough understood by doctors, insurers, patients or policy makers. If you want more on this then I can recommend strongly Clinical Epidemiology: How to Do Clinical Practice Research and Medical Decision Making The problem of course is the great cost paid by one afflicted (true positive case) against the massive inconvenience of the many false positives. We're not yet clear about how we value the balance between the good for one and the inconveneience of many. (I tried to answer this conundrum in an article with Ged Garbutt in JME called "Should the practice of medicine be a deontological or utilitarian enterprise?)

This book gives an interesting overview of many aspects of how medical evidence- and when its predictions are likely inaccurate or based on too little follow up.

He's very good at analysing how small error rates applied over a large number of events yield significant numbers of potentially adverse events. It's the same maths that allows agents and stockbrokers to earn a lot on small percentages of large sums of money.

Overall this is a good short book that gives a concise overview of to use graphs and graphics well to illustrate a point fairly, and proportionately. The examples here are all medical but it is easy enough to adapt the examples to other fields.

A wise and entertaining treat

This book is a witty and erudite delight. With good humor and clear prose, Howard Wainer combines insights about the use (and misuse) of statistical data with terrific examples of how (and how not) to present information in visual forms, such as charts, graphs, and maps. As the title suggests, Wainer focuses principally on medical data, with examples ranging from epidemics to diabetics. This makes the book especially important at a time when the nation is groping its way toward the goal of “evidence-based medicine” -- evidence, after all, is not much good (and potentially harmful) unless we know how to understand it properly and present it clearly. But Wainer’s take-home lessons about effective (and ineffective) visualizations transcend the separate examples he discusses. As a result, Medical Illuminations will be illuminating to anyone in any field – business, education, sales, public policy, and many others -- who must try to make sense of statistical evidence and then figure out the clearest and most effective way to present the implications of that evidence. And in addition to Wainer’s many thoughtful suggestions, this short and almost breezy book is just plain fun to read for its own sake: devoid of jargon and arcane mathematics; full of intriguing observations and unexpected surprises. author is well written but HATED the plot

I'm giving this 3 stars for the fact it was well edited and the dialog and writing was well done in the fact it flowed. I liked the setting and the characters.

But I absolutely HATED the plot. Really...really hated it. I really enjoy well written m/m/f menages so don't get me wrong but the only reason our heroine was with both her bosses was over a misunderstanding. It was obvious she was only slept with Cole because she wanted Des so bad the entire time and it was the only way to be with him. She never wanted to be with Cole and the only reason it was hot for her was because Des was there. She finally can't stand it anymore and calls it to a halt before ending up FINALLY with Des.

And the thing that really really annoyed me the most was that she never told Des that she knew it was HIS shirt she was smelling and not Coles, which is what started the whole misunderstanding in the first place. In fact that whole misunderstanding was one of the most ridiculous I've ever read in any book to set up a conflict.

Spicy Christmas novella!

In this erotic Christmas story, Wendy and Des have both shared an unrequited lust for each other for several months, but not acted upon it to maintain their professional relationship. When Wendy is caught with the proverbial "hand in her cookie jar" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) by Des during a late night office party, it's his chance to take things further, and add his trusty co-worker Cole into the mix. This was definitely a spicy read! Though it starts out with a menage situation, in truth Des and Wendy have stronger feelings for each other than just wanting a sexual relationship and it makes for a very special Christmas for them. It was a quick, fun read and will definitely light your candle! 4 stars.

Very Different! But in a good way. This is definitely not your typical story line - but you won't be disappointed if you like hot, steamy and erotic and don't mind menage and a little MM action!

Things I'll Never Say was the very first m/m romance that I ever wrote so I have a special place in my heart for Sam and Ryan. They made me fall in love with the genre itself. Every time I re-read it, I find myself smiling by the end, happy for Sam and Ryan. Readers have written to me and said they felt like they were falling in love with the two main characters as they read it. I hope the story has the same effect on you:)

True love never runs smooth, especially at eighteen. Sam and Ryan have been best friends since they met in school years ago. Now Ryan is heading out of state for college and Sam is looking at attending culinary school. Ryan is in love with Sam and convinced his best friend is straight while Sam is devastated Ryan is leaving. As the two spend every waking moment together before Ryan's departure, Sam comes to realize his feelings for Ryan are definitely more than just friendship. But their first attempt at romance ends disastrously, sending Ryan off to school and Sam convinced their friendship is over.

Things I'll Never Say is a coming of age love story between best friends turned lovers, Sam and Ryan. This is an incredibly romantic story about finding your soul mate as a kid and that changing into true love once older. Both Sam and Ryan are well characterized but they're also very young and immature. Sam reacts horribly and childishly to the tone of Ryan's innocent comment, which sends Sam into a tailspin. Although the story conveys the deep emotions of the two men, pining away for each other, loving the other with the certain hope nothing will ever come of it, the light touch to the writing helps keep this from being too cliché or annoying.

Romantics are likely to really adore and devour this story since it's so sweet and harmless. It has a strong happy ending and gives both young men lives, interests, and an identity beyond their youthful longing for each other. Sam is a budding chef and Ryan is going to college so they'll no doubt grow and mature naturally over the course of their lives. Their drama is mostly emotional as they despair over lost love and things they assume they could never have. The intensity of their emotions feels honest for their age, yet it's sweet and engaging.

The solid writing creates a fun, interesting story that is incredibly sweet and romantic with flawed characters that are inexperienced and somewhat immature. That's not surprising given their background and age so I doubt many readers will hold this against them. Imagine teenagers as they pour out bad poetry to high pitched ballads and this sets the tone but with a light hand that makes it enjoyable and not eye rolling. I easily recommend this to romance fans who I think will be highly satisfied with the story.

I loved this story! If your a sucker for a good romance then this is for you. It may be a little predictable, but our hearts tend to go in that direction in these stories anyway. They both love each other but they dont dare tell each other for fear of losing their friendship. A great read that wont disappoint. :)

Best Friend Soul Mate story

About 1800 locations - worth the $1.99 I paid. Have paid more for same length.

As with my review of her other book, "Unintended", I recommend "Things I'll Never Say" if you are looking for a light read about two 18 year old guys.

Sam and Ryan have been best friends since they were 10 and have basically been inseparable ever since. Sam's parents are high society socialites who are hardly ever at home and don't give Sam much attention at all. Ryan has basically been living with him a majority of the time. Ryan is going off to college in Seattle and Sam is staying in LA. Sam is dreading Ryan leaving for school - he doesn't know what he'll do without his best friend. Ryan chose to go out of state to college because he has been in love with Sam since what feels like forever and he doesn't dare ruin their bond by admitting his feelings. So, he thinks getting away will help him get over his feelings for Sam.

The night before Ryan leaves for Seattle changes everything...

Didn't give it 5 stars simply because of length and when compared to Amy Lane or Mary Calmes the writing is simplistic and predictable. I'm not saying it wasn't a good story or good writing. It just has to be appreciated for its simplicity and aww moments.

About the Author
Giovanni Maciocia is one of the most highly-regarded and respected authors and lecturers in the West. He is Visiting Associate Professor at the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has many years of experience in teaching and practice. Giovanni trained initially in the UK and then in China, learned Chinese to be able to study from original Chinese texts, and was one of the first practitioners and authors to introduce Chinese medicine in a clear and accessible way to a Western student audience.

Well structured, Broadly researched, Excellent resource.

Highly consistent with the style of Maciocia's other foundational works in oriental medicine, acupuncture and herbology -- this one is very well organized, the text is crisp and succinct. It contains many clarifying illustrations plus substantial details on the "how-to" for diagnosis, differentiation and treatment of mental disharmonies using acupuncture and/or herbs. It is a great starting place, even for persons relatively new to the Chinese medicine perspective to these disciplines. Yet it is constructed to serve as a rapidly scanned handbook on return visits with many summary visuals (drawings and textbox highlights inserted by the publisher).

There are several strong points for its use:
1. Inclusion of basic pulse and tongue patterns relevant to mental/emotional health questions
2. Discussion of constiutional or five element patterns
3. Detailed discussion for westerners of the components of the psyche in chinese medicine, integrating diverse sources including Buddhism, Confuscianism, and Jungian psychology
4. Good review of ancient and modern views regarding emotions and the "self"; including the ancient greeks,classic western european philosophers and modern neurophysiology in a manner that can be compared and potentially integrated with eastern philosophy.
5. Useful appendices including a bibliography on the classics of chinese medicine which outlines what each of these contain should the reader wish to pursue them.
6. Detailed coverage regarding common mental health issues from the perspective of Chinese Medicine (depression, anxiety, insomnia, bipolar patterns, night terrors, and attention-deficity hyperactivity disorder). These are primarily addressed from a diagnostic framework consistent with TCM, but there is still a substantial section relating to the channel concepts. It does not have chapters specifically for the severe psychoses (understandably as these likely require a more complete shift to and/or coordination with western modalities).
7. Its one of the few resources which includes not only case studies but some clinical trials, often with control groups (placebo or pharmacological controls)coming from both western medicine and oriental medicine journals for each of the common mental health issues listed in #6 above.
8. Good diagrams to remind the reader about point locations are included very close to where these are mentioned in the text. Extra points are defined and illustrated when applicable, thus diminishing the need for newcomers to routinely keep a point atlas nearby, just in order to follow the flow of the text.
9. A great deal of effort was clearly expended to create very memorable drawings using modern concepts such as circuit boards and town maps to illustrate how some of the point combinations or meridian interventions might work. Several of these seemed to settle into my memory in a way that had not worked before.

Potential weaknesses seemed relatively minor to me but included:

1. At times it was hard to discriminate what information might be coming from his translating classics versus drawing on his own opinions and clinical experience, though obviously the latter is substantial.
2. The written text and illustrations are in a 2-color format, black for the standard text and red/maroon for highlighted text as well as frequently interposed summary boxes. When I am tired -- the red is somewhat irritating and limits my ability to continue focused reading or scanning. I am used to red denoting serious cautions or extremely critical highlights -- here its use is more general. Probably a publishers' choice to distinguish this one from his other books that are in a different color. I can appreciate the symbolic connection between red and heart, mind, psyche, etc. However the ease of readabililty for me is reduced a little.
3. Some of the "summaries" and "clinical notes" feel overdone to me -- duplicating text I just read one paragraph before. I recognize that once I've finished several chapters, this provides a rapid overview of the most important points to be more easily relocated by scanning. However, on my first pass while trying to just read through the text it slowed me down slightly.

Overall Maciocia's book is well conceived and executed. It also serves as a nice complementary work to Shen: Psycho-Emotional Aspects of Chinese Medicine. They each have differing strengths. Maciocia's is likely to be more appealing to those just learning about chinese medicine or clinical psychology/psychiatry or those who want an easily accessible reference handbook for direct clinical application. Rossi's is more likely to appeal to a veteran in these fields who seeks more detailed philosophical and academic discourse.

A masterful book by a master acupuncturist

I am thoroughly enjoying this book! It is extremely well-written. I particularly like the comparison of the TCM psyche with western thoughts on the psyche.... I believe that this book could truly revolutionize the field of mental -emotional health. Thank you for writing & publishing such a masterpiece!

exceptional book

The book not only highlights Western favorites like Jung and Aristotle, but also manages to compare and contrast them seamlessly with Taoist and Confucian ideals. It's typical Maciocia style with excellent charts and diagrams as well as concise yet elegant wording and deep esoteric reflection, yet somehow managed to exceed my expectations. For a person who is well versed in TCM it's really a must. For those that aren't, I wouldn't recommend it, as a certain level of understanding of the medicine is needed to really appreciate the aesthetics of this manuscript.

About the Author
Jack Erjavec has become a fixture in the automotive textbook publishing world. He has decades of experience as a technician, educator, author, and editor, and has authored or co-authored more than 30 automotive textbooks and training manuals. Erjavec holds a master's degree in vocational and technical education from Ohio State University, and he spent twenty years at Columbus State Community College as an instructor and administrator. A long-time affiliate of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers, he also served as executive vice-president for the organization and spent several years on its board of directors. Erjavec is also associated with ATMC, SAE, ASA, ATRA, AERA, and other automotive professional associations.

Ken Pickerill is a Certified Master Automotive Technician (with ASE Area L1) and an instructor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Mr. Pickerill was a technician for 22 years before entering into the training field. Pickerill has more than 36 years of technical and teaching experience. He received his M.S. degree in career and technical education from Indiana State University.

This series just keeps getting better and better

My first ever Erotic novel was Heather's first book Divine Grace, the first in the series. For personal reasons it will always be my favorite book. Having said that, wow is this latest book in the series good? No - it is GREAT.

Jayne the h in the book, has lived threw hell for the last 10 years fighting cancer. Seth the H, who could not love this man. I will not give spoilers, just to say that there are things that Seth says to Jayne that will just melt your heart. There were a few surprises that I did not see coming.

I am not a writer, but I know what I like. And after 13 books from Heather "Her Gentle Giant" is a two part story. I have not been disappointed yet.

Awesome as always.

Heather Rainier writes some of the most unique books. She has sex scenes which can trigger some major hot flashes even if you are not old enough to have them but her books have an awesome story as well. Jayne proves that it is really never too late to go after what you want and that life is too short to waste. Seth realizes that even though he doesn't want to be hurt again, he can't let the best thing ever just walk out of his life. It is another awesome book. Thanks Heather. A job well done.

Another great read!

Once again, Ms Heather has produced a great book. I have all the books in this series and I have not been disappointed yet! I have remembered to keep tissues handy, tho. You may want them yourself!

The intimate scenes are hot. The nonsexual scenes are so very believable. There is laughter, tears, confusion...all thrown in to make it seem like you could drive to Divine, Texas and see all this going on! I SO wish I could move there!

Heather Rainier has a way with prose that makes her characters seem so real. They are not perfect. But then, no one is. These characters tho....you can just about imagine yourself in the same position, feeling the same pain, laughing at the same jokes. They make mistakes just like everyone does. That is a big part of why they are believable. Because we can see ourselves doing the same things. There is also hope in this series. Hope that no matter what, you too, can have a happily ever after. Whether that happiness comes from a rodeo clown, a bull rider, a cowboy, a jeweler, a scarred ex-military, a tattooist, a bar owner.....or anyone in between, that happiness is attainable. Love is worth the fight.
