The book came in okay condition and the story itself was nice. Plus, the Ryan sisters are good role models for young girls. Whether it be for musical intelligence or school intelligence or both.

Grade 3-8-Fans of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Scholastic, 1998) won't be disappointed when they rejoin Harry, now on break after finishing his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Reluctantly spending the summer with the Dursleys, his mean relatives who fear and detest magic, Harry is soon whisked away by his friends Ron, Fred, and George Weasley, who appear at his window in a flying Ford Anglia to take him away to enjoy the rest of the holidays with their very wizardly family. Things don't go as well, though, when the school term begins. Someone, or something, is (literally) petrifying Hogwarts' residents one by one and leaving threatening messages referring to a Chamber of Secrets and an heir of Slytherin. Somehow, Harry is often around when the attacks happen and he is soon suspected of being the perpetrator. The climax has Harry looking very much like Indiana Jones, battling a giant serpent in the depths of the awesome and terrible Chamber of Secrets. Along with most of the teachers and students introduced in the previous book, Draco Malfoy has returned for his second year and is more despicable than ever. The novel is marked throughout by the same sly and sophisticated humor found in the first book, along with inventive, new, matter-of-fact uses of magic that will once again have readers longing to emulate Harry and his wizard friends.

A really cool book

I think the Harry Potter books are really fascinating. They are full of suspense and irony. I wouldn't have read this book because I thought it was for younger kids ( I'm 13)but my friend was reading it so I gave it a try. I didn't put the book down until I finished it. It was that good! I don't want to be rude either but it really does not promote witchcraft. The whole time I read it, using black magic never crossed my mind. I know parents can be overprotective about that stuff but what about JRR Tolkien's Hobbit series and Disney movies with witches and wizards in them. SLeeping Beauty and Snow White and the 7 dwarves show this. Most stories or movies have a villian that is either a sorcerer or a witch. I thought this book was really awesome and even if you are above the age of the Reading Level read it anyway! I love Harry Potter: he is really responsible and smart. He is a good example. His friends are really funny and so are all the other characters. This is really good literature. Thank you so much Ms. Rowling for writing these books.

Mesmerizing

I'm a senior citizen who loves Harry Potter. I have read the first 3 books and will purchase "The Goblet of Fire" on books on tape.
I won't go into the plot. Suffice it to say it follows the book. The acting was wonderful by our 3 main stars. There is not enough of Alan Rickman, a truly wonderful actor. Kenneth Branagh was so-so and I don't know the man who played Lucious Malfoy but he was perfect. I hated him in "The Patriot" and hated him even more here. Richard Harris will be sorely missed. What a fine performance for his last film.
I never realized that the film was 2 3/4 hours. The time flew. The special effects are outstanding.
I liked the further character development. You see what a wonderful and loving family Ron Weesley comes from. You find out why Hagrid is the way he is. You also get to realzie why Draco Malfoy is the way he is when you get to see the father.
There was so much to see. So much to enjoy.
For the first movie, I saw the movie first and then read the book. For this story, I read the book first and then saw the movie. Either way, I was thrilled with both movies.
I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward the the third movie.
If you haven't had the opportunity to see "The Chamber of Secrets", please go and see it. It's a treat for the eyes, mind and soul.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry, a twelve year old boy is continuing another fascinating year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. This second book in the J.K. Rowling series is a must read! Not only do the main characters Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger set out to solve a new problem but, they realize that somebody has opened the Chamber of Secrets. Through trial and error our heroes search for clues to save one of their friends. Again Harry must put his life in danger to save others who are important to him. J.K. Rowling has introduced us to some new characters in book two. We meet a magical elf, Dobby, a new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart and finally Ginny Weasley, Ron's younger sister who joins the famous trio. I liked this book because it was a true page turner. As the reader you can search for possible clues along with Harry, Ron and Hermione. I would recommend this book to anyone over seven years old. J.K. Rowling did an excellent job on this book because it's exciting and full of adventure. I have learned from this book that life is full of tough challenges and problems. No matter how hard it is you have to be brave and trust in yourself to do the right thing.

A Wonderful Book About La Befana!

I wish there were more books about La Befana in the US; thankfully, even if this is the only one you have ~ it is a WONDERFUL book telling the Italian legend of Befana. In many ways, the story of Befana reminds me of the biblical story of Mary and Martha (Lazarus' sisters). While a guest in thier home, Mary chose to spend time with Jesus while Martha is too busy with her household chores. In The Legend Of Old Befana we meet an old woman who is constantly sweeping. When the procession of kings pass through her town and tell her of the birth of the Child King she decides to follow. She bakes all day in order to have a gift to bring for the Child. She also plans to sweep knowing that the Child's mother will be tired.

However, rather than set off to find the baby Jesus, she tarries in order to sweep. Her decision to delay in favor of sweeping costs her a glimpse of the Child King. To this day, she searches for the Child, visiting children while they sleep, leaving them gifts from her basket.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to share this celebrated Italian legend! Another EXCELLENT resource is Ken Lonnquist's CD titled Old Befana: Old Befana. You can also download the entire album in MP3 format which is cheaper and faster. It has the story of La Befana and songs.

Scary and necessary

This book scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Seriously, it was so odd and scary that I used to hide it in my closet in hopes that my parents wouldn't read it to me. I don't think it's supposed to be scary, but the thought of an old witch flying around during Christmas time (instead of Santa, who I was more familiar with) was just too much for me to handle.

Having said that, I bought this book as a gift for my best friend's little girl... I figure, I turned out okay despite the Befana traumatizing of my youth, so perhaps she will, too.

They are an Italian family, so they appreciated it!

Very well done

Many many years ago, one of my friends told me the story of Befana - and I fell in love with it. So when I saw this book, I thought it would be a great little book to give to my niece & nephew. I sat down to read it when I received it - and it didn't take but 3 pages to see the stories are drastically different. I have to believe that the published story is the accurate one - so I have to ask my friend where the heck she came up with or heard her version. BUT, this book is beautifully illustrated and great for kids.

About the Author

Daphne C. Watkins is a faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and the Department of Psychiatry. She studies gender disparities and mental health over the adult life course using mixed methods research approaches. She teaches graduate-level courses in research methods, mixed methods research, and community interventions.

Deborah Gioia is Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore since 2006. Her clinical and research areas have concentrated around first episodes of psychotic disorders in the general population of young adults and now in veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Other research interests have been in practitioner adoption of evidence-based practices and everyday evidence of neuropsychological processes in persons with serious mental illness. She teaches courses in serious mental illness and has taught qualitative research methods in the PhD program.

Definitely worth buying and keeping handy on your bookshelf.

Social science research is complex, and mixed methods research is one approach for bringing a more complete picture of context and participant voices to our findings. This kind of research can be challenging, though, as researchers grapple with the assumptions and details of how to frame good research questions, structure rigorous data collection and analyses, and integrate data sources. These authors take readers through a step by step process of actually doing the work- from conceptualizing how it should work and why, to integrating data in a rigorous way to get the most from the information gathered. There are helpful graphics and signposts throughout the book that are accessible and easy to follow, and it is clear by the way the book is structured that they have taught this material to students before. This is definitely worth buying and keeping handy on your bookshelf!

Great for Qual, Quant and Mixed Methods Research

As a first year tenure track professor, this book has been extremely useful to me. I do both qualitative and quantitative work and found it difficult to bring both methodologies together in my research. I don't consider myself more proficient in one over the other, and this book did a good job of speaking to both sides and how they compliment one another. This book helped familiarize me with mixed methods, but I also found it useful for my qualitative work alone. I prefer to analyze qualitative data by hand and Dr. Watkins presents an excellent way to standardize/organize transcripts and engage in coding in a way that is effective and easy to understand (see RaDar Technique). I highly recommend this book if you're looking to familiarize yourself with qual and quant research methods in addition to engaging in mixed methods research.

"I really enjoyed this book. I have some experience with mixed methods research, but would not consider myself an expert. This book, however, expertly walks a novice to mixed methods research through how to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. The way it handles the material could also provide a useful guide to more experienced mixed methods researchers. I especially liked the way Watkins and Gioia presented the different mixed methods designs, described the three exemplar mixed methods studies, and their detailed treatment of data integration. Overall, great book and I highly recommend it for researchers (in social work and other applied disciplines) who are interested in a primer on mixed methods research."

 In 1977 the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, instituted a written examination as one of the first major requirements toward the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. Its purpose was to determine whether first-year students in the Ph.D. program had successfully mastered basic mathematics in order to continue in the program with the likelihood of success. Since its inception, the exam has become a major hurdle to overcome in the pursuit of the degree. The purpose of this book is to publicize the material and aid in the preparation for the examination during the undergraduate years. The book is a compilation of over 1,250 problems which have appeared on the preliminary exams in Berkeley over the last twenty-five years. It is an invaluable source of problems and solutions for every mathematics student who plans to enter a Ph.D. program. Students who work through this book will develop problem-solving skills in areas such as real analysis, multivariable calculus, differential equations, metric spaces, complex analysis, algebra, and linear algebra. The problems are organized by subject and ordered in an increasing level of difficulty. Tags with the exact exam year provide the opportunity to rehearse complete examinations. The appendix includes instructions on accessing electronic versions of the exams as well as a syllabus and statistics of passing scores.

This new edition has been updated with the most recent exams, including exams given during the Fall 2003 semester. There are numerous new problems and solutions which were not included in previous editions.

A real pearl!

This book is a rare peak inside one of the best Ph.D. programs in Mathematics in the world. It allows you to try out and test yourself on the same problems that the best young and aspiring mathematicians are testing themselves.
The problems are neatly arranged by subject and in increasing level of difficulty, and the solutions, are not only beautifully
written, but somewhat surprising and unexpected for a seasoned student. I pull mine out of the shelf on the rainy days and try a few more, and when I get one, I really savour it!

Excellent Problem Book

The problems in this book are excellent, they are both entertaining and instructive. I thought I knew calculus, linear algebra, and all of the other typical undergraduate subjects very well, until I purchased this book. After working several problems, mostly without success, I realized that there is a big difference between knowing theorems and knowing how to use them. Since then I have worked these problems daily to improve my "working knowledge," and it has made me a much better mathematician. Learning the definitions and theorems is just the first stage of mathematical knowledge. In this form your knowledge is simply something stored in memory. In the second stage, you must turn it into something more like "software," something that is an active part of your thinking. The only way to do this is by solving problems, and for undergraduate mathematics, this is probably the best book of problems you will find. Highly recommended.

Excellent Problems!

These are great problems for those who would like to review undergraduate mathematics or those who would like to try some challenging problems. They are not as difficult as the problems on the Putnam competitions or those in the Math Monthly , but many require a bit of thought and some ingenuity. Some of the problems are routine, and if you don't want to review the basics, you can skip those and just try the more difficult ones. Even experienced problem solvers will have fun with some of these! Anyone who teaches undergraduate mathematics should have this collection. Highly recommended.
