"A Desert Habitat" is a charming book selection to accompany "Cactus Hotel"! Its beautiful close-up color photography lends reality to the water color illustrations of "Cactus Hotel". It portrays the sonoran desert animals that inhabit the desert along with their habitats. The text is clear and bold-very inviting to first and second grade readers. It is especially suited for vocabulary enrichment. My students enjoyed it as a read-aloud and as a resource book for drawings and reports. "A Desert Habitat" is a must-have read-aloud to accompany the Kendall-Hunt Pathways Theme book "Cactus Hotel"!

One and only mixed-signal verification book that utilizes the digital verification methodology (OVM) while using a concrete example (SATA-PHY) throughout the book. This book covers the wide range of verification topics, ranging from digital verification and model validation, to analog verification in early chapters. Chapter 6 and subsequent chapters cover more AMS aspect. Since there is really no standard yet for mixed-signal verification and its features/environment/flow are EDA vendor specific, this book provides a high-level but comprehensive overview to all the components of mixed-signal verification.

The author is very knowledgeable and has written one of the only books on this subject. However, the printing quality is so poor, I can't tell what's going on in many of the figures. Also since English is clearly not the author's first language, some editing would be very helpful.

Stunning and Scholarly Book about Kantha Embroidery

This is a very beautiful and interesting book about kantha, embroidered quilts from Bengal, that were collected by Stella Kramrisch and Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz and then donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The large format book was published in conjunction with an exhibit of the quilts at the museum from December 2009-July 2010. One can only hope that the exhibit will travel, for these embroidered quilts that originated in the recycling of used family garments display great originality and remarkable technical skill. The items collected by Kramrisch and the Bonovitzes were mostly done on white cotton using colored cotton thread that was pulled from other garments. The simple running stitch was used to create background texture and was combined with other stitches that were used for patterning. The motifs used were derived from ritual art practiced by the populations of the area, and were often interpreted with original and whimsical styling. Indeed, one of the most striking characteristics of the kantha presented in this book is the artistic ingenuity of their makers in the idiosyncratic presentation of design motifs.

There are seven scholarly essays to accompany the presentation of the collection, but the book's greatest draw is the photographs of each of the quilts from the two collections. Though most of these objects share the same layout of a central motif and surrounding panels, every single one of the quilts is original in the makers' interpretations of what should be done with the space. These photographs are exquisite and are large enough and detailed enough to do justice to these original works of art. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in embroidery and textile art.

A brilliant, decisive compilation of all that is Kantha. It is historical, descriptive, thorough - and a delight with many, many pictures, photographs and close-ups of Kantha work throughout the centuries. One of the best books I have bought for many years.

Mr. Farr has a unique eye for capturing the 'Great American Road Trip'. Through the pages of his book, you are riding shotgun as he takes you on the journey of a lifetime across the American landscape via Historic US Route 20. Never heard of it? That's because when someone talks about that type of journey we automatically think about the old chestnut, 'Route 66'. Starting at the very beginning in Boston, Mr. Farr will highlight your tour with information that is both fascinating and not particularly well known. A slice of lost Americana that harkens back to the glamour days of long vacations taken in a huge automobile that easily seats six and a trunk that could fit a moose inside. It's like having a top notch tour guide along for the journey with a working knowledge of every mile along the road. The photography is crisp, striking, and has a flair for capturing the local spirit of the towns and cities that flank the well-worn pavement. A clear-headed and clearly written examination of the pros and cons of different ways for generating electricity

Almost everyone has an opinion on energy policy and what method(s) for producing electricity should be promoted in this country. And most of those opinions are half-baked. TRAVELING THE POWER LINE won't make you an expert, but it will make you better informed. And, hence, it will make you a better citizen.

Julianne Couch is a journalist. At the time she researched this book, she was teaching at the University of Wyoming and living in Laramie, Wyoming. Her starting point was concern for the ecological condition of the planet, as reflected in her efforts in her personal life to conserve energy and reduce her carbon footprint, although she wasn't rabid about it. Curious to know more, she researched and wrote TRAVELING THE POWER LINE.

Couch investigates nine different ways of producing electricity: wind farm; coal-fired generation; nuclear; natural gas; biomass; geothermal; hydroelectric; solar-thermal power; and tidal power. Believing that seeing enhances understanding, she visited a facility engaged in each form of electrical generation: from a near-by wind farm in Wyoming to a nuclear plant in Nebraska to a geothermal plant in Utah to an experimental project in easternmost Maine to use underwater currents (principally tidal currents) to generate electricity. The result is a readable -- and instructive -- book.

Each of the chapters is about twenty-five pages long. They are not highly technical. By and large, Couch takes the reader along with her as she investigates each form of electricity-generation, and the reader hears what Couch hears from plant operators, public interest advocates, and independent experts. By and large, Couch refrains from advocating one form of power generation vis-a-vis another, although the underlying bias is towards reducing greenhouse gases without crippling industry and the economy.

The lessons are that one cannot look at any form of electrical generation in the abstract, that no one form is the be-all and end-all, that one must also consider distribution and patterns of consumption, and that in evaluating the economic and ecological efficiency of any proposal for a new electrical generation facility there always are a multitude of factors to consider (down to whether certain species of animals - for example, the sage grouse - will be listed as endangered). Along the way, Couch exposes some of the commonplaces and shibboleths of contemporary public debate as falsehoods, or at least unhelpful overgeneralizations.

Couch's prose is not brilliant, like that of her journalistic hero John McPhee. Sometimes it is even a tad pedestrian. And there are a few instances in which an edit (or a stronger one) would have been useful - such as when she "putted along" [should be "puttered"] U.S. 30 at sixty miles per hour. But her writing is lucid, and the book never bogs down in details. If anything, the reader comes away wanting to know more - and with this subject, that's a good thing.

A brilliant idea poorly executed.
Tell the reader the fascinating story of power delivery from plant to home. Visit sites across the nation. Speak clearly.
Alas, little of this perks through the political moraine of 'alt energy' and disaster reflections.
We are unknowing recipients of extreme energy efficiencies because of the grid (great book, Grid, by the way) and the invisible workers who maintain it.
This work does little to demonstrate awareness or authority.
