About the Author
J.E. House is Scholar in Residence, Illinois Wesleyan University, and Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Illinois State University. He received BS and MA degrees from Southern Illinois University and the PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana. In his 32 years at Illinois State, he taught a variety of courses in inorganic and physical chemistry. He has authored almost 150 publications in chemistry journals, many dealing with reactions in solid materials, as well as books on chemical kinetics, quantum mechanics, and inorganic chemistry. He was elected Professor of the Year in 2011 by the student body at Illinois Wesleyan University. He is the Series Editor for Elsevier's Developments in Physical & Theoretical Chemistry series, and a member of the editorial board of The Chemical Educator.

Kathleen A. House is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Illinois Wesleyan University where she has taught for over 20 years. She received BS and MS degrees from Illinois State University and the PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Her interests lie in chemical education, environmental chemistry, and inorganic chemistry.

very good for 2nd year university inorganic chemistry

There are two books with the title of “Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry”, both directed at sophomore level intro inorganic chemistry. There’s this 2nd edition by House & House and another book by Rayner-Canham & Overton, currently in its 6th edition.

Both textbooks approach the subject in a less rigorous, less mathematical way using the periodic table to survey the most important elements and their chemistry. Typically used in courses which come before the student has encountered major amounts of advanced, theoretical physical chemistry. Each book has a minimal amount of transition metal and organometallic chemistry.

The Rayner-Canham book covers more material and certainly has more end-of-chapter questions. But overall I like this black & white book by House & House better. The font size and general layout is more readable, the end of chapter annotated references are more relevant, the chapter material is a bit more concise and to-the-point and the problem sets contain fewer questions. That way, the instructor can assign any chapter along with the questions as homework and know that everything’s been covered and the students aren’t overwhelmed with too much work.

The one major shortcoming of House & House is that the early foundational chapters on bonding are much too limited on topics like VSEPR, valence bond theory, covalent/ionic/metallic bonding. Perhaps they intended lecturers to cover that material in class with whatever depth they deemed necessary. (update: Looks like some of these topics have been added to the 3rd edition. But they had to go to a smaller font to add this extra material and still keep the book to a reasonable size; too bad on the smaller font size)

You can now get the 3rd edition of House & House but I like it less due to its full color printing. Too many colors doesn’t help with learning and makes the book look like a gaudy cartoon. And the full color printing needlessly drives up the price.

The only thing I wish about this 2nd edition is that a hardcover edition was available, but it’s not.

For those of you who only want one book that covers most of the undergraduate inorganic chemistry curriculum except organometallics consider Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J.D. Lee, 5th edition (~1000 pages).

K. R. RAO is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1975, with two other researchers, he introduced the Discrete Cosine Transform, one of today's most powerful digital signal processing techniques. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

ZORAN S. BOJKOVIC and DRAGORAD A. MILOVANOVIC are members of the Traffic & Transport and Electrical Engineering faculty at the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

Preface

The past years have seen an explosion in the use of digital media. Industry is making significant investments to deliver digital audio, image and video information to consumers and customers. A new infrastructure of digital audio, image and video recorders and players; online services and electronic commerce is rapidly being deployed. At the same time, major corporations are converting their audio, image and video archives to an electronic form. Digital media offer several distinct advantages over analog media. The quality of digital audio, image and video signals is higher than that of their analog counterparts. Editing is easy because one can access the exact discrete locations that need to be changed. Copying is simple with no loss of fidelity. A copy of digital media is identical to the original. Digital audio, image and video are easily transmitted across networked information systems. These advantages have opened up many new possibilities.

Multimedia consists of Multimedia data + Set of interactions. Multimedia data is informally considered as the collection of three Ms: multisource, multitype and multiformat data. The interactions among the multimedia components consist of complex relationships without which multimedia would be a simple set of visual, audio and other data.

Multimedia and multimedia communication can be globally viewed as a hierarchical system. The multimedia software and applications provide a direct interactive environment for users. When a computer requires information from remote computers or servers, multimedia information must travel through computer networks. Because the amount of information involved in the transmission of video and audio can be substantial, the multimedia information must be compressed before it can be sent through the network in order to reduce the communication delay. Constraints, such as limited delay and jitter, are used to ensure a reasonable video and audio effect at the receiving end. Therefore, communication networks are undergoing constant improvements in order to provide for multimedia communication capabilities. LANs are used to connect local computers and other equipment, and Wide Area Networks (WANs) and the Internet connect the LANs together. Better standards are constantly being developed, in order to provide a global information superhighway across which multimedia information will travel.

Organization of the Book

The book is organized into six chapters:

Chapter 1 describes the concept of multimedia communication modeling. It presents a brief description of elements for multimedia systems. After that, we discuss user and network requirements together with the packet transfer concept. An overview of multimedia terminals is also given.

Chapter 2 explains that multimedia communication is more than simply putting together text, audio, images and video. It reviews a recent trend in multimedia research to exploit the audio-visual interaction and to build the link between audio and video processing. The emphasis is on lip reading, synchronization and tracing audio-to-visual mapping as well as the bimodal person verification.

Chapter 3 is devoted to multimedia processing in communication. We present and analyze digital media and signal processing elements. Next, we describe a general framework for image copyright protection through digital watermarking. We then review the key attributes of neural processing essential to intelligent multimedia processing. Finally, this chapter concludes with recent large-scale-integration programmable processors designed for multimedia processing such as real-time compression and decompression of audio and video as well as the next generation of computer graphics.

Chapter 4 deals with the issues concerning distributed multimedia systems. We give an overview: main features, resource management, networking and multimedia operating systems. Next, we identify the applications like interactive television, telecooperation and hypermedia, and we survey the important enabling technologies.

Chapter 5 focuses on multimedia communication standards. We discuss Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG)-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-4 Visual Texture Coding (VTC), Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)-2000, MPEG-7, MPEG-21, International Telecommunications Union-Telecommunication Sector (ITU-T) and Internet standards. We discuss the ITU-T standardization process in multimedia communications from the video and speech coding, as well as from multimedia, multiplex and synchronization points of view (H.320, H.321, H.322, H.323, H.262, H.263, H.26L, H.221, H.222, H.223 and H.225).

Chapter 6 concentrates on multimedia communication across networks. After an introduction about packet audio-video in the network environment, we discuss the concept of video transport across generic networks. Multimedia transport over ATM networks is described, too. We then move to multimedia across IP networks, including video transmission, traffic specification for MPEG video transmission on the Internet and bandwidth allocation mechanism. We present and illustrate the concepts of Internet access networks. In addition, we discuss special issues relating to multimedia across wireless networks such as wireless broadband communication for multimedia audiovisual solutions, mobile and broadcasting networks and digital TV infrastructure for interactive multimedia services.

We have focused our attention on these topics with the hope that the level of discussion provided will enable an engineer or a scientist to design multimedia communication systems or to conduct research on advanced and newly emerging topics. Glad I got this, it's peace of mind to say the least

A year or so ago I was in an airport, browsing a book stand and there were 2 fear filled books, one referring to lead in lipstick in the title, and something about dirty looks but both carried an extreme message of fear attached to cosmetics and skin care. If you didn't quit buying drug store or department store lipstick, makeup and skin care your life might be at risk. Scary stuff.

I spotted a few fallacies but I'm not a chemist so I was troubled. I am a long time fan of Paula Begoun's work so I am both skeptical of the cosmetic industry and the non science based detractors who view things in a black and white world.

Too many of the cosmetic/skin care product detractors are living in an either or universe disconnected from reality--either it's green and organic and preferably vegan therefore good for you (often stating a hatred of evil chemicals disregarding the fact that even the greenest most organic and vegan vetted skin product is made of chemicals) OR it's an evil brew put out by multinational corporate bad boys just TRYING to give you cancer in their rush to fulfill their greedy bottom line. (forgetting that evil caustic brews killing off their buyers tend to have a negative effect on the bottom line!)

On the other hand I look at what goes into some things like menthol--a potent irritant carefully inserted into a Eucerin lotion designed for sensitive reddened skin and it doesn't make me feel confident in the Eucerin brand at all. I saw this BEFORE I bought this book on my search for nice creams and lotions that won't irritate my sensitive allergenic skin (with rosacea). I know from past experience that anything minty fresh or menthol will drive my skin nuts. I remember thinking "Isn't Eucerin supposed to be SAFE for sensitive skin?" And I know from reading Paula Begoun Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me: A unique guide to skin care and makeup products from today's hottest brands - shop smarter and find products that really work!The Original Beauty Bible: Skin Care Facts for Ageless Beauty that lots of people with sensitive skin and even lots with NORMAL skin can't tolerate menthol. I pay attention to the fine print.

Yeah, like I said --I'm a skeptic. Just cause it has a reputation for being mild doesn't mean it is.

A few months back I bought The Beauty Aisle Insider, liked it's no nonsense cosmetic chemist authors take on things, agreeing with a lot of what he said, taking notes on things and figured whatever this guy writes on the subject is worthwhile.

Along came this book and I bought it immediately sight unseen. Glad I did.

Funnily enough this book covers that same Eucerin lotion problem I noticed. And a whole lot more.

If you like Paula Begoun's work as the "cosmetics cop" you will enjoy and appreciate this book. The author takes on the cosmetic giants AS WELL AS the scientifically illiterate cheerleaders for the green movement.

This is a brave man. I hope he has bullet proof undies as he is going to be shot at from all sides. It's really great that a chemist who works in the field stood up to tell us what is safe, and what isn't. What is hype and what is just scare mongering.

I have a friend who has breast cancer. I accompanied her to the "Look Good Feel Better" seminar put on by the cancer society in our city. She was given a goody bag filled with gentle cleansers, cosmetics, lotions and skin care donated by many of the big companies. Neither she nor I feel that parabens had anything to do with her cancer. Her prognosis is great, she will be fine, but it's sure nice I can show her the passages in this book on why NOT to worry about parabens and other preservatives. Putting on her makeup really DOES help her get thru a bad day.

And the beauty products at my local health food store are depressingly bad and expensive both. Poor performance, lousy colours, little range of selection and for the price of Dior or Chanel!

What I appreciated the most was the sense of perspective. Very often the scare tactics push you to ignore the actual math, that gives you the perspective you need to assess your OWN risk benefit ratio. And that is what Perry brings back into the discussion. The dose as the author reminds us, makes the poison. Big doses can kill you, micro doses are harmless.

Another point he brought up is how the scaremongers often profit from sales of the "green" cosmetics and skin care, while ignoring the fact that many of them use the very same "chemicals" as the non green big corporations do.

Then he takes on the business of "green washing" in which people who HAVE made their choices for their own reasons, are being suckered into paying WAY more for a product that gives a green impression, without actually sticking to the green/organic principles it purports to follow.

BTW just for clarity, I'm NOT against green products or organic products-- I choose to buy them often--in food and cleaning products but I look at what I'm buying and I DO avoid a lot of substandard stuff and green washed stuff. This book will help me pick winners from losers in the beauty products aisle and made me feel better about certain lines like Burt's Bees.

Then there is the big industry cosmetics and skin care and hair products-- Perry brings up a lot of ways that the big guns like Johnson and Johnson who have a reputation for safety are putting that on the line for various reasons. The Eucerin example above, and many other products get an evaluation from a cosmetic chemist's view regarding safety and efficacy.

I was able to spot something that might be why a lot of shampoos make me itch while a few don't. Why with my sensitive skin and scalp it's not safe to put a drop of conditioner on my hair and just leave it like a leave in conditioner. Why I don't have to worry about my favourite Elizabeth Arden lipstick and lead, or my favourite OPI nail polish is ok even though it was formulated before OPI dropped "the big 3".

Last thing I'll mention is Perry explains how to find a cheaper equivalent with the same active ingredients. I learnt to read cosmetic labels following Paula Begoun but this takes it up a notch. Very helpful to the budget. I plan to use this info to bag me some good deals in the hair care aisle now that I have an idea which things cause me trouble and what things would work especially well for my hair.

I love it, and I plan on reading it over and over along with The Beauty Aisle Insider and anything else he writes. Way to go Perry!

Copyeditors are important.

The information in this book is good, although it's the same content that is available on the blog. That alone isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you're going to do that, at least make sure that the book version is well organized, well formatted, and copy edited thoroughly. The organization of this book makes no sense, making it hard to use as a reference. The formatting for the ebook is really weird and makes it hard to read and oh my Lord, the typos in this thing are just embarrassing. I'm a big fan of the blog but there is no value in buying this book.

Great book with beauty answers you won't get anywhere else.

I per-ordered the actual book and sat down to read the information. The authors took their time in answering some of the toughest questions people may ask about beauty. They also provided detail information. I think it is a great book to have as there are a lot of questions the authors addressed that you will not be able to find honest answers--even on the web. This book covers skin, hair, and nails. So if you want to learn about beauty science with sincere entertainment, pick up this book and have fun learning.

I enjoyed this book for the following reason:

1. Inside the front of the book is a clear table of contents to help guide you through just in case you don't want to read through the complete book.

2. The authors have a great sense of humor which relates to the questions or their answers.

3. The information provided has been studied or tested and the answers are honest.

4. There is information about what it takes to make a product good and why a product may not work.

5. I learned how to properly judge a product without being bias or overly excited because it is new.

6. Authors avoid using too much science vocabulary, so this book is easier to read and understand.

About the Author
W. Steve Albrecht is the Andersen Alumni Professor of Accountancy in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from BYU and MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and Certified Fraud Examiner.

Dr. Chad O. Albrecht, assistant professor at Utah State University, received his PhD from ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and currently teaches forensic accounting and ethics. His research focuses on international fraud and corruption from a humanistic perspective. His research articles have appeared in numerous journals and have been quoted in multiple news outlets. Previous to his doctoral studies, Dr. Albrecht worked as a licensed stockbroker for the Bank of Montreal. He currently serves as associate editor of Cross Cultural Management: An International Journal, a peer-review journal by Emerald Publishing.

Dr. Conan C. Albrecht, associate professor of Information Systems at Brigham Young University, teaches enterprise development, middleware, and business programming. Dr. Albrecht researches computer-based fraud detection techniques, e-commerce platforms, and online group dynamics. He has published several articles on fraud detection and information theory in numerous academic and professional outlets. He is currently developing an open source framework for computer-based fraud detection. The core of this research is detectlets, which encode background and detection information for specific fraud schemes. He hopes the system will eventually serve as the foundation of a large, online repository of detectlets about all types of fraud in the next few years.

Dr. Mark F. Zimbelman is an accounting professor and Selvoy J. Boyer Fellow at Brigham Young University (BYU). He teaches classes on auditing and fraud examination and focuses his research exclusively on fraud. His research has been published in numerous academic journals and he has worked with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors in writing various publications on fraud. Dr. Zimbelman received his CPA license and worked for more than six years as a financial statement auditor and, later, as a controller in industry. After obtaining his PhD he worked with KPMG in their fraud and forensics practice. This opportunity provided hands-on experience investigating violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, financial statement fraud, vendor fraud, and embezzlement.

Great book for students in accounting.

As soon as I started reading this book, I had no problems keeping up with the assigned readings in my class. The examples of what people will do to decieve others and themselves are gut wrenching, but give a true picture of what people do. This book has made me consider specializing in fraud.

Student friendly and well-written

This book is a very thorough and well-written introduction to the field of fraud examination. Authors' lucid and easy-to-read style with plenty of fraud story examples is helpful to digest complex concepts such as financial statement frauds and e-commerce frauds. Chapter sizes are carefully kept small. Quizzes and case studies are also well-thought out.

Some reviews on Amazon don't do this book a justice. Overall a comprehensive text book in the area of Fraud examination. For curious and interested in this field, I also recommend Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports, Second Edition.

Pretty Decent

The book is relatively well written with easily understood concepts. The massive amount of examples are tremendously helpful in bridging the gap between theoretical academics and real life fraud as well as making the reader think about fraud in different ways. For example, one case is about a normal inventory audit, except that the company was trying to pull a fast one by overstating their inventory. What the auditors did was to check the weight and size of the inventory that was on the books and compare it to the warehouse size and capacity of their forklifts. The two did not match as the warehouse was too small to fit all of the inventory and the weights of the products were far in excess of what a forklift could lift.

The main issue and this was already brought up was redundancy. The book tends to do through out the book. I haven't quite figured it out if its meant to reinforce specific concepts or if their editor was just incompetent.

The book is still useful for those who haven't taken audit and useful for those who have as it either lays some knowledge for audit courses or reinforces audit knowledge.

One of the better textbooks on C#

Out of approximately one dozen different texts I have owned and read to learn programming in C#, I'd put Farrell's text in the top 3. I actually learned more from the C# 2010 edition, but I also own this one and re-read many of the chapters. It is well written and well organized. It does not attempt to cajole and amuse the reader in the way Head First C# or C# for Dummies does. It uses short and straightforward console applications for illustration purposes, and although it's not as terse as Murach's text, for some this style may be too boring and not terribly cohesive. If you want to go to the trouble of learning C# and some Windows Forms and XAML to make graphical C# apps, get the Head First book. As far as cons go, as a result of the typical college textbook mark-up, it is much too expensive.

Good for instructor-led class

I could see how people could give bad reviews if reading as a reference book, but I am taking an instructor-led course and the book is organized well for that. If I wanted to just look up certain procedures or syntax there would be many other books to choose instead

Like trying to use a Volkswagen manual to fix a Toyota

I'm using this book right now for school work. I'm coming at programing from an HTML/CSS background so that may have something to do with it and it may not. I hate this book, the explanations do not read succinct to me, the definitions are not understandable, and the tutorials do not seem to build on anything. This book is like having a Volkswagen bug manual for a Toyota Camry, it will give you some idea about the subject but when you need to change a tire your going to be frustrated. Better money and time spent watching the tutorials published my Microsoft and user 'kudvenkat' publishing under Pragim Technologies on YouTube.

TEACHERS and COLLEGE PROFESSORS: Please do us students a favor and ditch this book! Put together a syllabus of YouTube vids' and teach us what this book can not. Thx!
